The event is on from Monday 13 May to Sunday 19 May at the Aotea Centre
As Carole told us, "Our heads are full of numbers ... 4 large storage units with hundreds of cartons stacked to the roof, containing
18000 books from more than
220 authors, international and NZ, displayed on
3 huge bookstalls at the Aotea Centre, which combined equal
3 times the size of our Ponsonby Road Bookshop
40 staff employed to work from 9am on Monday until 11.30pm on the following Sunday night
The sheer scale is a little overwhelming! We have former staff, ex-booksellers, staff from other bookshops, students, and a range of book-lovers, employed for the week. It’s hard work, especially the pack-in all day Monday and the pack-out on Sunday night. But it is also very exciting!
As the Auckland Writers Festival gets bigger and bigger, and becomes one of the most significant literary festivals in the world, so the on-site bookstalls must increase in size.
The Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre holds 2,200 people and it is already booked out for some of the big international authors, with thousands of school students filling it for three days. Free pukapuka adventures will be happening on the fifth floor for kids over the weekend. Maori, Pasifika and Pakeha writers are featured in a programme that is thrilling in its scope and diversity.
So, with numbers under control, we’ll join thousands of Aucklanders as our heads fill with stimulating ideas. What a buzz!
