Motu Beachfront art villas has just opened in Rarotonga

Tucked away on the shores of the stunning Titikaveka lagoon, MOTU (meaning island) is a stylish new haven for tranquillity and relaxation once the Cook Islands and New Zealand commence quarantine-free travel.

Offering ten self-contained villas within footsteps of the white sand beach, each villa is secluded in tropical gardens laden with colourful Pacific plants and flowers. The newly modernised villas invite sophisticated relaxation with designer interiors and a collection of artworks from across the Pacific featuring artists such as Michel Tuffery, Fatu Feu’u, Brent Holley and Sylvia Marsters.

Established as a trust by the Herne bay-based Dunn family, the profits from MOTU go into the local community through initiatives in healthcare, education and the arts.

The family’s support for Cook Islands healthcare began 15 years ago when MOTU owner John Dunn began donating his expertise as a surgeon to Rarotonga hospital. This has flourished into a long-term commitment involving his New Zealand based medical staff, his daughter Elizabeth who is also a doctor, a regular programme of surgeries, training and support, and a full scholarship for Pasifika medical students to study in Auckland.

Dunn has been a strong advocate and influential in promoting a safe travel bubble with New Zealand and vaccination in the Cook Islands, with television appearances and opinion pieces in all major New Zealand media.

In support of the local environment, MOTU uses environmentally friendly products, state of the art wastewater management and electric vehicles and bicycles to help preserve its piece of paradise.

As lovers of art and design, John and his wife Rose are patrons of New Zealand’s Auckland Art Gallery and the Tautai Pacific Arts Trust who offer funding and support to Pacific artists.

On their vision for MOTU, the Dunns explains: “It is our aim to create in MOTU the Pacific’s first art resort. We see MOTU as an ongoing chance to improve, to learn, to beautify, to invent. To be cosseted, indulged and recharged safe from the bustle of daily life. Free from the stresses that cause us all to seek our motu in the sun.”

To celebrate its official launch, MOTU is offering guests two night’s stay complimentary when they book for seven nights, or one night’s stay complimentary when they book for five nights.
