Iconic Sports Items Up for Auction

On 29 April will see iconic items offered in New Zealand’s specialist Sports Memorabilia auctions held online by Mowbray Collectables.

“The auction has over $55,000 in Sports Memorabilia and has great historic and collector interest.” said David Galt, Managing Director of Mowbray Collectables.

Top lot is the shoes that New Zealand great middle distance runner John Walker wore when he broke the Indoor 1500m World Record in 1979. Estimated at $15,000, both shoes are signed by John Walker and accompanied by a letter confirming their authenticity.

Top medal estimate of $1,750 is for a WWII Group of Six awarded to Adriaan Jacobus Van Heerdeen. He wasn’t just a Springbok, but the first Springbok to score a try against New Zealand in an international rugby union match. He is also the only Springbok to compete at an Olympic game – taking part in the 400m Hurdles at the 1920 Belgian Summer Olympics.

Early New Zealand Rugby items also feature. They include a Jersey and Cap that belonged to Joseph Pudney dated 1892 - 96. Both show the Wellington Rugby Football Union symbol. They are estimated to sell for $1000. Other Poneke club items are in the auction. Rugby Caps belonging to Frederick Tilyard are estimated at $700. Tilyard played for the Wellington Rugby Football Union and was a significant member of the Poneke Club. He played one game for the All Blacks in 1923 against New South Wales.

Olympic items include parts of Sarah Ulmer’s 2004 Athens uniform. A singlet and a cap that Ulmer wore during the games is on offer with an estimate of $1000. A medal from the 1908 London Olympics awarded to people who donated money for the games is estimated at $1000.
