Leading local brand launches capsule version of its iconic cafe coffee

Coffee lovers rejoice! Allpress introduces specialty capsules to its coffee offering...

Leading Kiwi coffee roastery Allpress has taken its iconic and signature Allpress Espresso Blend, served in the best independent cafes around the world, and created its first capsule espresso, promising coffee lovers a flavourful and premium brew in the comfort of their own home.

The Allpress Espresso Speciality Coffee Capsule has been years in the making and is a new innovation that will add to the local brands’ existing premium and specialty coffee offering from 12 July 2021.

The new capsule was carefully created using Allpress’ signature Espresso Blend, the same specialty grade coffee used by cafe partners around the world. It’s designed to deliver a more accessible solution for those seeking to enjoy coffee at home without sacrificing the unmistakable and premium Allpress flavour.

Research commissioned by Allpress found Kiwis are more likely to purchase Allpress coffee to enjoy at home than any other specialty brand. However, one in five at home coffee drinkers now use a capsule machine which Allpress wasn’t able to cater for - until now. This data, coupled with feedback from loyal Allpress customers, was at the heart of the brand’s decision to innovate by creating a capsule that retained the integrity and flavour of its cafe coffee.
The end goal was simple - create and produce a capsule espresso coffee that was as close to a cafe experience as possible by championing flavour and innovation and leaning on three decades of coffee roasting experience.

To craft the capsule espresso, Allpress reformulated its Allpress Espresso Blend to highlight the rich caramel sweetness and increase depth and ground it ‘super-finely’ for a slower extraction. The grounds were then roasted at a high temperature to maximise the solubility of the coffee, recreating the iconic flavour of Allpress’ cafe coffee.

“We didn’t feel like most pods met our expectations when it came to flavour so we took the time to challenge the status quo and worked on creating a product that we felt stood up to the expectations of Allpress coffee consumers,” says Allpress Head Roaster, Zach.

“This meant going back to the basics and thinking about how the Allpress Espresso Blend could be adjusted to work best as a pod. We had to think about the roast profile, the mix of origins in the capsule and finally, finding the correct grind size that allowed the right amount of water contact and gave us the most balance to our cup,” explains Zach. “After rounds of trying, testing and perfecting, we reached a point where we were able to achieve the iconic Allpress Espresso Blend flavour, adjusted uniquely as a capsule.”

Allpress has always prioritised flavour since its humble beginnings in 1989, roasting coffee in a garage to supply cafes around Auckland. Growth and innovation have remained at the forefront of the business and adapting to suit its community’s needs - the new Allpress Espresso Speciality Coffee Capsule is an example of this commitment coming to life.

After more than three decades in the coffee industry, Allpress founder and ambassador Michael Allpress has moved with the times but the capsule coffee is one of the brand’s biggest ventures yet.

“It was important to us to respond to our community and their needs without losing what is at the heart of our business, and what Allpress is loved and known for - our flavour promise. Creating a coffee capsule was not a decision we took lightly, it was something we knew we had to get right. A lot of love, time and care has gone into the creation of the Allpress Espresso Specialty Coffee Capsule and we believe we have created the best espresso capsule on the market,” he says. “Allpress is a much-loved brand with a really special and inclusive community and culture. The Allpress Espresso Specialty Coffee Capsule allows us to bring this culture into more homes of those who love our coffee most.”

Allpress Espresso Specialty Coffee Capsules retail for RRP $12.50 per 10-pack and are compatible with most capsule coffee machines.

The capsules will be available at www.allpressespresso.com, at Allpress Roastery Cafes, Farro Fresh and other specialty grocery stores nationwide from 12 July 2021.
